Environmental Sustainability Committee
Purpose
The purpose of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability is to promote environmental stewardship and development that is based on ecological principals at the University of California, Merced.
Goals and Responsibilities
Sustainability refers to the physical development and institutional operating practices that meet the needs of present users without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, particularly with regard to the use and conservation of natural resources. The Committee is charged with advising the Chancellor on matters pertaining to environmental sustainability goals, policies, and practices at UC Merced.
The mission of the Committee shall be composed of seven central goals:
• To engage the campus in an ongoing dialogue on environmental sustainability;
• To integrate environmental sustainability across campus programs such as teaching, research,
operations, and public service;
• To instill a culture of sustainable long-range planning and forward-thinking design;
• To inform and advise on campus operational practices and programs that enhance campus sustainability;
• To inform and advise campus construction design guidelines and standards on all new buildings which seek to achieve U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDtm) silver ratings;
• To inform and advise operational practices as to maintain LEEDtm – Existing Building (EB) for all buildings that have been LEEDtm certified; and
• To inform on the implementation of the sustainability requirements set forth in the UC Merced Long Range Development Plan.
