Recycling Program
UC MERCED RECYCLING PROGRAM
As part of the University’s larger commitment to sustainability, the following is a summarized list of proper recycling procedures for UC Merced main campus, the Castle Facilities, the Mondo Building, and the Grogan Warehouse. Below is a link to a list of approved recyclable materials to be commingled in single blue containers. The following highlights important facts and actions you must take to ensure our program is a success:
- Your department should provide you with a workstation 28 quart blue recycle container along with a similar black trash one. Please place recyclables only in the blue containers. Below is a link to comprehensive list of acceptable materials. If the recyclables are contaminated with trash, all contents are diverted to trash at our county landfill.
- Small amounts of cardboard can be placed in these containers. If you have large boxes or amounts of cardboard, please ensure that it is clean, broken down, and neatly stacked in a common departmental area (like your copier room) next to a plastic recycle receptacle. Please ensure you do not include any plastic, Styrofoam, or packing peanuts with cardboard.
- Larger blue containers are positioned in most departmental common areas, especially copier and break rooms to handle larger volumes of paper and other recyclables. These containers can accept any recyclable.
- Custodians empty all containers and retrieve cardboard daily, but this may be adjusted based upon staffing and volume.
- Large green modular recycling and trash stations are currently positioned at: Housing (Terrace Center), Dining, Library (Student First, 1st Floor Lantern), Classroom (Main entrance), and Science and Engineering (main entrance, 2nd floor connector).
- Student Dining, Recreation and Housing areas will adhere to the same recycle material list below. Each student suite will have their own blue recycle container that residents will empty directly into blue 90 gallon wheeled totes positioned throughout Housing. Cardboard must be broken down and placed in the 2 cubic yard white containers at the Resident parking lot. Resident students with questions on Recycling should see their Resident Advisor.
Please remember that Environmental Health & Safety coordinates the disposal of mercury containing lamps, cathode ray tubes, e-waste, and batteries. Small blue containers for dry batteries only are positioned next to the large modular stations discussed above. Please contact Justing Delemus to coordinate disposal of the above waste.

All new employees must attend an orientation briefing conducted by Human Resources. Recycling is addressed briefly at this meeting.
Facilities Management has a Student Recycling Coordinator and two Assistants who develop and implement programs. See contact numbers and email below.
If an item or material is not listed, please be patient as we grow and develop our fledgling program. We have a small staff and will strive to continually expand our program.
