Given the magnitude of the state funding deficit facing UC, President Yudof recently proposed that UC consider systemwide furloughs and/or salary cuts. He welcomes feedback from UC faculty and staff about the proposals. -
UC Furlough/Salary Reduction Plan Options- Questions and Answers
A summary of options for systemwide furloughs/salary reductions was sent to the UC community on June 17, 2009. Following broad consultation, President Yudof intends to present a specific option for approval to The Regents at their July 2009 meeting. To date, no decisions have been made as to which option will be implemented. Below are answers to questions about the proposals. Dear Faculty and Staff Members,We have promised to continue to provide periodic information about the state budget situation, its impact on the University of California and our campus. The economic downturn that has gripped California is taking its toll on universities as well, and many educational institutions are resorting to severe measures to cope with the crisis. In Gov. Schwarzenegger’s May 26 revised budget, the University of California is scheduled for a further reduction of $519 million in 2009-10. This comes on top of the deep cuts already taken in the current fiscal year.

UC president details consequences of proposed budget cuts
Testifying before the state’s Joint Legislative Conference Committee on Budget, UC President Mark Yudof today (June 1) described the devastating consequences of the proposed state budget cuts for the university, its students and the services it provides to the state. -
UC pursuing cost-saving measures to cope with mounting budget challenge
The University of California is pursuing a range of cost-saving initiatives to cope with the global economic contraction, UC officials told the Board of Regents this week, including continued reductions at campuses and the Office of the President and further limits on senior-level pay.

State budget contains $115 million in new cuts for UC, stretches UC's total budget challenge to $450 million
The state budget adopted by the Legislature and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for the rest of 2008-09 and the 2009-10 fiscal year contains $115 million in new permanent funding reductions for the University of California system and, by virtue of other growing costs not addressed in the budget, extends the university's total immediate state budget challenge to $450 million.

Given the significant economic problems facing the State of California, the nation, and the rest of the world, serious resource decisions must be made. As such, a hiring freeze has been implemented for the campus. The freeze impacts all staff positions from all fund sources, with the exception of those positions funded on research dollars. Open faculty positions will be re-evaluated as well. -

At a time when California faces one of its bleakest economic outlooks, you may wonder why we are presenting state legislators with a 2009-10 budget that asks for a 23 percent funding boost.
Some have called it "pie in the sky." I call it a dose of reality. -
